The Context

Food waste is one of the largest contributors to avoidable greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. When organic waste is disposed of in landfills, it generates methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide. Across Pakistan and many developing economies, institutions, universities, healthcare facilities, corporate offices, hospitality providers, and government organizations generate substantial quantities of organic waste every day. However, most lack the systems required to accurately measure food waste generation, estimate associated emissions, or monitor sustainability performance over time. At the same time, governments, investors, development organizations, and international sustainability frameworks increasingly require transparent environmental reporting and evidence-based climate action. EcoGen was developed to bridge this gap by creating the climate data infrastructure necessary to support sustainability compliance, environmental governance, and circular economy development.

The Approach

EcoGen integrates two complementary technologies: EcoGene and EROWM.  EcoGene functions as an AI-powered waste intelligence and recycling guidance platform that supports waste categorization, environmental awareness, and sustainability data collection. EROWM serves as a climate monitoring and sustainability analytics platform that evaluates food waste generation patterns and estimates the associated carbon footprint. Through AI-powered analytics and environmental monitoring, the system calculates potential emissions, tracks waste diversion performance, and measures carbon reductions achieved through recycling, composting, and resource recovery initiatives. Organizations receive monthly, quarterly, and annual sustainability reports that support climate disclosures, ESG reporting, environmental certifications, and sustainability planning.

Results & Impact

EcoGen has developed a scalable framework for climate-conscious waste management and measuring environmental impact. Projected implementation models indicate that organizations can potentially divert 40–60% of organic waste from landfill disposal, reduce food waste-related carbon emissions by up to 30–50%, and establish verifiable environmental baselines within their first year of adoption. The platform supports informed decision-making, improves sustainability reporting accuracy, enhances ESG performance, and contributes to broader climate resilience objectives. Over time, EcoGen aims to help institutions collectively prevent thousands of kilograms of organic waste from entering landfills while generating measurable carbon reduction outcomes.
